Differencies between LOB and LONG in Oracle


1. Multiple column in the table:

LOB - yes;LONG - no (only one)

2. Can be attribute of user-defined type:

LOB - yes; LONG - no

3. What is stored in the table:

LOB - locator only; LONG - entire value

4. What is processed:

LOB - locator or value; LONG - entire value

5. Maximum size:

LOB - 4GB (9i) and 128 TB later; LONG - up to 2 GB

6. Access order:

LOB - random, piece_wise; LONG - only straight

7. Can be replicated:

LOB - yes (either local or distributed environment); LONG - no
